How To Submit an Insurance Claim for Roof & Exterior Damage from Hail, Wind, Ice Dams or other Storm Hazards

The following are tips for preparing to file a claim, and what to expect during the process. Each process is a little different — a tree on a roof that has breached the sheathing calls for immediate remediation and actions to reduce the overall damage. Hail, by contrast, can cause subtle structural damage that impairs the integrity and lifespan of your roof but doesn’t cause an immediate leak.

Post Storm Evidence

1. Note the date and time of the storm. Your insurance claims manager will ask for the date & time of the loss and correlate that information with reports from the local weather and public safety authorities. This is important because some storms are considered so significant that a claim relating to it is not ultimately factored into your claims history and won’t affect your premiums. This is particularly true in some cases of ice dams during a particularly bad season with heavy snow loads.

2. Log Storm Evidence — It is worthwhile, especially in a Hail storm, to use a digital camera to take photos of your property, and particularly, the size of hailstones, as the size is directly proportional to the potential for damage to the roof and shingles. Document the extent of the storm, and damage, as much as you can.

3. Call Premier for a FREE Roof Inspection & Repair Estimate — Our certified storm recovery specialists will walk the roof and identify the extent of damage, and advise you as to whether there is a) immediate damage that requires mitigation or b) possible long-term structural damage that may be covered. We will also check your attic for signs of immediate leaks. We staff Emergency Crews to report to these types of events 24/7.

At this juncture, if there is any risk to an immediate leak and further damage as a result of the storm event, we will tarp the roof and expedite your claim process. In the case of subtler damage that warrants a claim but is not immediate, we recommend the following next steps:

Submitting the Claim

  1. Locate your homeowner’s insurance policy.
  2. Make a note of your insurance policy number and deductible. The deductible figure will be important.
  3. Organize your facts and records; insurance policy number, date/time of loss, hail size (if known), photos, videos, damage items.
  4. Call your homeowner’s insurance claim number and provide the necessary information as requested.
  5. You will be given a claim number by your insurer.
  6. When an insurance claims examiner is assigned to your case, it helps to send your photos and videos of the hail storm for authenticity to better support your claim. The claim examiner will assign a claims adjuster to make an official roof inspection and prepare a repair estimate.

Claims Adjuster Roof Inspection

The claims adjuster will contact you to make an appointment to inspect the roof. It’s helpful to share your photos and/or videos of the storm with the adjuster. A Premier representative can meet with the adjuster as well to facilitate the process.

The claim adjuster may bring along a “high team” to inspect steep and/or high roofs with proper safety gear.
The roof inspection includes the taking of numerous photos, looking at dents in the soft metals (gutters, box vents, powered attic ventilators) and in the case of hail, the marking off 10 ft by 10 ft “test squares” to count the number of hail stone hits on the shingles. Hailstone hits will be marked with chalk for identification in photos.

The claims adjuster will write a report on his findings, prepare an estimate to make spot repairs or replace the roof (assuming damage was found), then forward the report to your claim examiner. The claim examiner will review the report and make a decision on your claim.
